Why Losing Weight Is Like Groundhog Day
Before I became a full time writer/author and Internet publisher, I used to work in health clubs. For 10 years, I managed health clubs, and every January, there was an huge influx of new members. Unfortunately, most of them were GONE by February! I swear this is not “urban legend,” it is absolutely true - I used to print out the attendance records to prove it! So much for new year’s resolutions.
Did you ever think about what the word “resolution” implies? The word comes from resolve or RE-solve as in to solve the SAME problem again and again, and again and again.
Did you ever see that movie (1993), Groundhog Day with Bill Murray, where he wakes up every morning only to re-live the same day over and over again?
Well, for most people, this time of year is like “Groundhog Day for weight loss” — living that same 20 lb weight loss from past years, over and over and over again!
It’s madness. And this year, isn’t it finally time to stop that madness? You can make it Stick this year - all year - and keep your progress steamrolling forward…. an unstoppable YOU.Forget the old approach: Quick fixes and “losing weight.”
The new way is here: Principles and “Burning fat.”
No more self-sabotage.

Actually, "resolve" means "determined" and derives from the Latin "resolvere" meaning "to loosen, unfasten, or release." As in, "I am determined to release this excess fat this year!"

well of course youre right... if you go back to latin roots. But that's not what I was referring to
Im talking about semantics and auditory ambiguity on another level as in the unconscious mind and how an
experience gets linked up to a word
this is the type of definition that few people outside of fields like hypnotherapy and neurolinguistic programming ever consider.
Words carry certain associations, not necessarily related to their latin roots
and re-solve SOUNDS like... RE- SOLVE solve again, and that co-incidentally happens to be what is linked up in most peoples minds
they subconsciously know the resolution wont stick, but they set them again anyway every year?
so why do it?
intead set well formed goals

PS also very interesting about the root being related to "release". "release" is a word hypnotherapists
like to use in fitness field.... never "lose" weight
instead, "release" fat, etc
better use of language gives us better results eh?
have a great one!

Hey Tom,
Great point that you made above to Josephs comment.
As usual; you hit the nail right on the head in you usual eloquent, way.
When I work with my clients; I train them from day one to change their thoughts, words; and there fore actions.
I hate to say it; but what I see is that usally it is with an "inch, by inch it's a cinch mentallity.
Cause what I really would like to do is to make them feel an immense amount of pain "right now today" so that they would immediately make all the changes in their lifestyle to change fast.
But for some reason; even in my self; it just seems to take some time to go from a luke warm, or a "the glass is 1/2 empty mentallity to a "to the glass is 1/2 full mentallity.
Cause as I see it buddy; that is the key to life. How can we twist any and every situation that arises and reframe it to look at it in an empowering light.
Kudos to you for explaning it. You see; I see it with my clients who are "analytical"
or have to know the answers to everything.
Getting in great shape is not knowing what to do; but it is doing what you know (on a continual; habitual type way)
You see life is coming at us so fast now a days; that when someone says "Resolve" they are not thinkin back to the stupid latin root meaning.
Maybe the ebonics people had a good idea. What is the first impression in some ones gut when they say and think the word.
And you are exactly right; when the say re-solve it makes them think (but more importantly FEEL) that they blew it (again) and they are back at square one.
This is not good. PEOPLE JUST DO NOT GET HOW IMPORTANT THEIR THOUGHTS AND WORDS ARE!!!
And to add one more thing to what you said about re-lease versus lose Tom.
Very, very powerful good stuff. But I am not sure the average person caught the difference.
Bottom line; feeling good 101; When someone says lose; this does not evoke a good feeling (aka lost my dog : ( )
versus re-lease; felling empowered because it was your decision to let go. (aka nursing an injured wild animal back to health and doing the right thing by letting it have its freedom back)
Bottom line as I see it;
Thoughts become words, words become habits, or habits become or track record and our destiny. And we are all at our
precise station in life because it is exactly where we want to be.
So until you decide to feel good; and draw good to you; and to stand up and reach your true potiential; you will stay right where you are.
Side note; Tom, myself, and many other life coaches around the world absolutely know that you "Do have the power to change everything today. Stand up; draw the line in the sand; get some social support (cause you will turn into who you hang around) and have fun.

I hate new years resolutions. They don't seem to do anything for me or anyone.
I was way out of shape at just the age of 20. To get back to my peak and to get in shape, I found altering pieces of my lifestyle helped me more than a month or two of intense exercise.
Good article.

Oh yes, the January rush to the gym is real. I know it's a selfish way to feel but I'm always a bit glad when it gets less crowded in the gym as the year wears on! To be honest I would actually be gladder if those new faces stuck around though.

Time to get back on the wagon, not onto the wagon wheels!!
8 reasons to stay focused, keep the muscle and burn the fat.
Ok maybe it is 100F in here, but I'm looking forward to not sweating after I eat!
