Intensity or Insanity? How Much Training Effort is Enough?

QUESTION: Tom, do you think that the intensity of your workout is”THE THING” that gives you results or is it more about being consistent with your workouts? The reason I ask is because I’m following your Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle nutrition program and I also use a high-intensity workout program called the Insanity series. I like these workouts, but I’m having a hard time pushing myself that hard every day and I’m finding now that I’m starting to dread doing them. I have been doing these workouts only 2-3 times per week instead of the 5 times per week that is recommended in the program. This workout brings me to my knees. I’ve started questioning myself and wondering if it’s even worth the torture. – Paul

7 Ways To Do More Pull-Ups: Your 1st Rep, 10 Reps, Even 20 Reps Or More

Last year, I used some of the tactics from today’s guest post to finally hit 30 reps of strict chin-ups for the first time in my life at age 46 (bodyweight at the time – 191 lbs). I had been able to consistently do at least 20 reps in a row and could work myself up over time to about 25 reps or so, but then always hit a brick wall. The one technique that was most effective in helping me hit my PR was the “grease the groove” method, where I actually practiced pullups and chinups multiple times per day, every day! Might sound crazy, and it’s not how I usually train for bodybuilding, but for pull up endurance, it worked just as promised… – Tom V.

What is the best time of day to work out? I wouldn’t blame you if you were confused about this because everyone seems to have an opinion: Conventional wisdom says train in the morning to start your day right and improve compliance.
