What a great story! What really strikes me is the level of mental 'digging' to truly answer the question "why?"
There's so many eating plans, and so many exercises out there, but without the proper mindset, they just amount to amount to much. I think it's great that you continually nurtured your "why" by remembering how well you felt when you were at your "strongest, fastest, and fittest" among other memories.
Anyway, congratulations on the great success, Shannon. Thanks for being my little 'nugget' of inspiration today. Tom, thanks for posting her story.

I have not joined the Inner Circle because I'm living on my finite (limited) retirement income and have to draw the line somewhere. But I've spent a lot of time hanging around the blog and reading from my BFFM primer. And it is astonishing the success one can enjoy with limited resources.

At 66 years of age, I've shrunk from my youthful height of 5'7 1/2" to 5'6". But my weight over the past 40 years had grown from 145 lbs to 175. A year ago, when a complete stranger in a parking lot congratulated for getting pregnant, I knew I had to do something.

Well, over the past 12 months, I've lost 30 pounds. I don't lift weights; don't have any. But I ride my bike a lot and I have embarked on a pushups training program -- those are free, lol. Last Friday, I did 52 consecutive pushups, and I say that isn't bad for a senior citizen. And I feel great. Importantly, it shows me that I've lost 30 pounds of fat, with minimal if any loss of lean muscle weight.

BFFM can be as sophisticated and/or complicated as you want it to be. But at bottom, BFFM is all about exercise and good nutrition. Kudos to all you good folks following the program. You have been a tremendous inspiration to this lurker.

I am a huge fan of TBL even though I know their methodology is suspect. If you watch enough shows then you will see that in week 2 contestants have a more down to earth weight loss and this is always a source of emotion. As a former instructor of Fundamentals of Nursing my complaint is this: Where is Dr H explaining the relationship between building muscle, which I do believe contestants ultimately achieve, tissue (normal) damage, and the inflammatory response---again entirely normal that should be expected as part of such an intense training program. Good! I've been wanting to express my opinion for years.

I LOVED the part about two way conversation between mind and body! I get this one way talk all the time, too, and Shannon expressed this struggle in such a visual way that I will always remember.

In regards to the foods, people hold on to so many misguided notions, and try to enforce them on someone else, it's not funny!
I remember my first potato I ate after reading BFFM. I was allowed! I still lost weight! I was overjoyed! Someone told me to avoid potatoes as a plague.

Shannon, your writing is very potent and powerful, and helpful to the others.
Congrats! You deserved it,
Warm regards,
Olga

Wow. Very inspiring. Thanks. I love this paragraph.
"Some people can relate to weight struggles, but are still holding onto excuses about why they can’t overcome them (I was this person), and may not want to see others accomplish their goals because it demonstrates that excuses can be overcome, and may make people feel uncomfortable about their own complacency".

Being 55 years old myself, I love reading about how someone who's 50 or older has transformed his/her body and gotten fit and healthy.

Your age should never be a limiting factor when it comes to getting fit and healthy. I'm in the best shape of my life at 55 years old, and it really is amazing who good you can look and feel if you follow a good nutrition and exercise program.
